by

The ICESP (Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo Octavio Frias de Oliveira) has applications open until the 31st of May for the 13th edition of the award that bears the name of the institution’s patron. The initiative is carried out in partnership with Grupo Folha.

The laurel created in honor of the then publisher of sheetwho died in 2007, seeks to recognize and encourage contributions from Brazilian researchers and other professionals working in the oncology field.

Original works can be submitted in the categories Research in Oncology and Technological Innovation in Oncology. In the first, original works published in scientific journals in 2021 and 2022, whose main author works in a national research and/or educational institution, qualify for registration.

In the Technological Innovation category, original works published in scientific journals or patents deposited from 2020 to 2022, whose author/inventor works in a national research and/or educational institution, qualify for registration.

The registration must be made exclusively through the form on the website www.premiooctaviofrias.com.br. The regulation is at the same address.

A person who has excelled in the field of oncology will also be awarded.

In 2021, a research that evaluated how physical exercise could fight cachexia, a condition related to cancer and that can worsen it, was the winner in the Research in Oncology category.

In the Technological Innovation in Oncology category, the winning work sought to develop a new test that would accelerate the diagnosis and follow-up of colorectal cancer. The research observed four types of microRNA — molecules that act in the signaling and functioning of cells — with large amounts in patients with this type of tumor.

As for Outstanding Personality in Oncology, Hugo Aguirre Armelin, a biologist, researcher and responsible for the discovery of the molecule related to the fibroblast growth factor, was chosen.

The choice of winners is made by a commission made up of outstanding scientists and members of society committed to the theme. The winners in the three categories will receive R$ 20 thousand and a certificate.

The award ceremony will take place on August 5th.
