Many believe that the breath of the person who consumed garlic, is treated with chewing gum, with aromatic candies, chewing “pins” of clove or raw mint. Experts, however, explain that the above are not effective ways.
Researchers at Ohio State University have found that there is something more powerful in eliminating the smell of garlic from our breath.
Thus, according to scientists – and after this research – raw foods prove to be powerful allies in the fight against bad breath caused by the consumption of garlic, precisely because they contain enzymes that eliminate odors and phenolic compounds that destroy volatile chemical compounds.
In particular, according to research published years ago in the Journal of Foods, scientists have studied how different foods affect the volatile compounds responsible for bad breath – and in particular the smell that garlic “seals »Our breathing, even hours – or days – after consuming it.
They themselves, in order to reach safe conclusions, gave the volunteers to chew for 3 seconds 3 grams of garlic, before giving them water to drink.
The researchers then evaluated the effect of consuming raw or cooked apple and apple juice, raw or hot lettuce, raw mint or mint leaf juice and green tea.
The results were counted exactly one hour after consuming each of the above, using a gas meter in the oral cavity, an organoleptic method that measures the levels of volatile sulfur chemicals, including hydrogen sulfide, methylmercaptan and dimethylisol.
However, the measurements also showed that green tea does not help in the fight against bad breath, while on the contrary “raw apple and raw lettuce reduced the concentrations of volatile gases by 50% from the first 30 minutes of consumption”.
