Anvisa publishes a list of more than 150 banned weight loss products

by

In order to facilitate the identification of the illegal weight loss trade, Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) made available this Friday (25) on its portal a list of more than 150 prohibited products.

The measure aims to expand access to information, both for establishments that sell this type of product, as well as for doctors and patients.

The drugs that make up the list did not have safety, efficacy and quality evaluated by Anvisa and/or are being marketed irregularly.

The list, which will be updated monthly, includes all products that were subject to the recall determination, in addition to the ban on manufacturing, distribution, trade, advertising and use, between March 1st and 10th of this year.

Complaints can be made to state health surveillance or to the agency’s ombudsman. Information such as the name of the product and the manufacturer, the place of purchase, the invoice and, if possible, a sample of the product must be provided, so that irregularities can be investigated.

Anvisa also recalls that there is already a consultation tool, in which it is possible to search by name or company for all irregular products identified by the Agency.

On February 3, a woman died in São Paulo after being diagnosed with fulminant hepatitis resulting from the consumption of a compound of “herbs for weight loss”.

The product, sold in capsules, was said to be “natural” and, in the composition, contained herbs such as green tea, carqueja and mata verde, hepatotoxic substances (which can cause liver damage).
