What the latest data on coronavirus mutations show – The image of Omicron in Attica

by

The SARS-CoV-2 National Genomic Surveillance Network, operated under the coordination of EODY, completed the genomic analysis in 231 samples that were randomly selected or targeted and cover the period 02 March 2022 to 21 March 2022.

From the control of 231 samples, a total of 216 samples were identified with strains of special interest (Variants Of Concern – VOC), all Omicron (B.1.1.529) (Table 3). One hundred and sixty-nine of the 216 Omicron strains were related to strain BA.2 (78% while last week the corresponding figure was 77%).

Since the launch of the National Network of Genomic Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus until today, a total of 52,085 samples of domestic cases have been tested in the country. Of these, 47,132 are from random sampling, 4,212 are from targeted sampling or sampling, and for 741 samples no sampling information is available.

During the two months before March 21, 2022, a total of 4,914 samples of domestic cases had been tested in the territory. Of these, 4,637 come from random sampling and 277 from targeted sampling or sampling. Among the 4,637 randomly selected samples in the territory for the two months prior to March 21, 2022, the two most common stakeholders isolated are Omicron with 96.9%, followed by Delta with 3.1% (Table 4).

Among the 277 samples taken or selected in a targeted manner during the two months before March 21, 2022, 82.3% belong to the Omicron strain and 17.7% to the Delta strain.

In addition, a total of 676 strains of special interest or under surveillance or interest have been isolated from samples of imported cases, of which 336 relate to Delta, 206 to Omicron, 113 to Alpha, 7 to Mu, 6 to Beta, 4 to B.1.1.318 (Variant E484K), 1 in Eta, 1 in C.36, 1 in Kappa, and 1 in B.1.1 (Variant E484K).

The evolution over time of the relative frequency of sequenced samples from random sampling per species of strains, up to week 10 of 2022 is shown in Figure 8, while additional temporary data are given for weeks 11-12.
