European Union authorizes fourth dose for people over 80

by

European Union health authorities on Wednesday authorized a second booster dose of Moderna and Pfizer’s Covid vaccines for those over 80, but considered it too early to issue a recommendation to the younger population.

A second booster dose can be given to adults aged 80 and over because of the “higher risk of developing a more severe form of Covid-19 for this age group”, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said in a note. ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Many countries ease restrictions even as infections continue to occur.

The EMA and ECDC considered it too early to apply a fourth dose to the general population.

The health authorities considered that there is currently “no evidence” in the European Union that protection for serious diseases decreases considerably among adults aged 60 to 79 years, but that they “will continue to watch the data”.

By the end of March 2022, 83% of adults had received a complete first vaccination course and 64% had received a booster dose, the health agencies indicated.
