Health says that the deaths of 38 children and adolescents are not related to the Covid-19 vaccine

by

The Ministry of Health said in a document that of the 38 deaths of children and adolescents who took the vaccine against Covid-19, there was no confirmation of any death caused by the immunizer.

In Brazil, Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) authorizes the use of Coronavac, from the Butantan Institute, and the Pfizer vaccine in this public.

The data are contained in an epidemiological bulletin of the folder released on Tuesday (26).

“To date, there is no record of AEFI [eventos adversos pós-vacinação] with a death outcome in the age group of five years to those under 18 years old with a confirmed causal relationship with the vaccines used”, he said.

There were 23 deaths classified as inconsistent or coincidental events, that is, adverse events caused by other health conditions, often pre-existing, and not by vaccines. Another 13 that were unclassifiable due to the need for information. Two had conflicting investigation data regarding causality.

The document points out that 3,463 cases of adverse effects were reported in the age group from 5 to 17 years. Of this total, 419 (12.1%) were severe and 38 resulted in death.

The mean age was 13 years, ranging between 5 and 17 years, and the same proportion of sex.

“The time interval between vaccination and the beginning of the event had a median of 30 days, ranging between 0 and 352 days, where four events occurred more than 30 days after vaccination, showing an inconsistent temporal relationship according to the classification of AEFI”, points out the document.

Anvisa authorized the use of the Pfizer vaccine to immunize children and adolescents from five years old last year. The Coronavac vaccine was authorized to be used in children and adolescents from 6 years of age in January this year.

The Instituto Butantan’s request was to use the doses in children from 3 years of age. However, the regulatory agency understood that there is not enough data to reduce vaccination against Covid-19 until that age.

On January 5 this year, the Ministry of Health announced that children would receive the vaccine without the need to present a medical prescription.

The vaccination campaign was opened last Friday (14) in São Paulo. The first immunized was Davi Seremramiwe Xavante, an 8-year-old indigenous boy.

The vaccination of children and adolescents is a sensitive topic in the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, as the president distorts data and discourages the immunization of young people. He even threatened to expose the names of Anvisa servers who approved the use of Pfizer vaccines in children.
