Mônica Bergamo: Cracolândia addicts’ search for treatment grows 23% after surgery

The search for drug addicts for treatment in state health units increased by 23% in the region known as cracolândia, in the center of SP, after the mega police operation carried out earlier this week. The data are from a balance sheet made by the State Department of Health.

According to the ministry, the Cratod (Reference Center for Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs) —a care and reception unit for drug users— recorded an average of 165 patients per day this week, against 134 the previous week.

The number of hospital admissions performed at the site after screening and observation also increased, albeit less, by 10%. There were 19 people hospitalized between Monday (9) and Thursday (12), according to the state government.

Also according to the secretariat, the Recomeço Unit located on Helvetia Street —which offers bathing and other educational activities for drug addicts—was another place to register a 20% increase in attendance, with a daily average of 114 people welcomed.

ACTION

In the early hours of Wednesday (11), the Civil Police and the São Paulo City Hall carried out a mega-operation against drug trafficking in Praça Princesa Isabel — the place began to house drug addicts in mid-March, when they migrated from the surrounding streets. from Júlio Prestes square, where Cracolândia was located. Six people were arrested, according to police.

REACTION

Since then, drug addicts have spread through downtown streets. On Thursday (12), a 32-year-old man was shot dead on Avenida Rio Branco, also in the center, amid the crowd of drug users.

Cardinal Dom Odilo Scherer, Metropolitan Archbishop of São Paulo, and actress Tuna Dwek attended the launch of the documentary “The Rabbi in the Cathedral”, which portrays the life of Rabbi Henry Sobel, who died in 2019. The event was held at the Congregation Israelita Paulista (CIP), in São Paulo, on Wednesday (11). Rabbi Ruben Sternschein was also there.
