A former royal chef has revealed how the Queen prefers afternoon tea and spoonfuls.
There was a strict protocol employees had to follow when working there, and the Queen might have “Spartan” taste.
Darren McGrady spoke exclusively to coffee maker retailer Coffee Friend and shared that Her Majesty drank afternoon tea every day while working for her family.
He states: “The Queen drank afternoon tea every day, anywhere in the world. If we were at Buckingham Palace and he was drinking tea alone, Prince William would join him or a garden of 6,000 people. A party will be held or the royal family will gather.” held in the UK, Australia.
The Queen loves afternoon tea and I think it’s probably one of her favorite dishes. Of course, when I was there, he would religiously sit and drink tea.
The menu must include two types of sandwiches with buns. One day it’s plain and the next day it’s raisins.
Darren shared that bstaff always called and reaffirmed the flavored buns he had the day before, so he didn’t offer the same service two days in a row.
This is followed by small cakes like mini chocolate eclairs, queen cakes, honey and cream cakes, fruitcakes, gingerbreads, banana breads, chocolate chip cookie cakes, and chocolate ganache cakes (her favorite).
This makes you drink Earl Gray tea, it must be hot.

1 softened butter (113 grams) - 1⁄2 cup and 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 tablespoons of baking powder
- 1 egg
- 3⁄4-1 1⁄4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup raisins (when making fruit juice)
- 1 glazed egg yolk
- 1 can of strawberry jam
- 1 can condensed cream (or sweet whipped cream)
Method:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large bowl, add the flour, baking powder, and sugar. Add the butter and knead until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.
- Make a well in the center and add the beaten egg and about 3⁄4 cups of milk. Stir the mixture with a metal spoon, being careful not to stir too much. Otherwise, the dough will harden. If the mixture is a bit dry, gradually add the remaining milk.
- Lightly spread the flour on the table and roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1 inch. Then press out with a 2-inch round cookie cutter. Place it on a baking sheet about 1 inch apart and spoon the beaten egg yolk on top.
- Bake for about 15-20 minutes. After cooking, transfer to a wire rack and let cool.
- Serve the pumpkin with jam and cream.
Darren added: “One thing I can say about the Queen is that it is very affordable.
That was one of the things that really surprised me when I moved from the Savoy to Buckingham Palace. I thought I smoked salmon, foie gras and caviar every day, but no.
“La Reina is a very, very cheap, simple and straightforward food. It comes from the early days of growth during the war.
As children, Prince William and Prince Harry loved chocolate cakes and would sometimes drink tea with the Queen.
But his last favorite was the caramel banana cake they ordered for dinner.
