If ghosts don’t scare you, do you visit this spooky monastery? Are you said to suffer from “ghost monks”?
Dutch photographer Roman Roebroeck never thought to enter an abandoned monastery in Siciniano, Italy.
The place has a terrifying past, shrouded in folktales and rumors that cursed monks haunt the land.
Roman chose it as the location for his next photo and the results are amazing.
One shows a dilapidated wicker chair sitting in front of a dirty blue table, a room littered with debris from windows and broken shutters.
In another example, ivy and nettles are found on a ruined path.
Called the “Devil Monks Monastery,” this collapsed monastery was a dream discovery for the 34-year-old novel. She has traveled the world for ten years, exploring abandoned buildings throughout time.
Romans who love architecture, history and photography love to explore the past of these buildings and how this affects the culture of the place today.
On a recent trip, Roman and fellow photographer Sven van der Waals discovered the monastery.
Italy has many abandoned buildings and monasteries, but it is special because of its fascinating history.
The notoriety of the “Covenant of the Devil Monk” dates back to the 17th century. This was a difficult time for most of Italy and Europe.
The Spanish occupiers oppressed the locals, plus danger and disease.
The novel says: “At that moment, a wandering man appeared at the entrance of the monastery and asked for hospitality. The monks welcomed him with joy, provided he joined them.
“But he soon fell back into his old habits and soon fell in love with a local girl.”

Later, Roman says that the monks found out about the relationship and punished the girl.
“He was burned alive because he was accused of witchcraft, and while he promised to lead a monastic life of chastity, the man was returned to the monastery,” he said.
But the man could not bear the pain and said, “The pain was so great that I died and cursed the monastery and everyone in it with my last breath.”
The monks died horribly one by one, eventually all of them died and never came back.
The spirit still lurks in the dark and gloomy halls, the empty corridors and the corrupted grounds of the monastery.
Despite its bad reputation, the monastery prospered until the 20th century, operating as a school and university until 1973.
Roman adds: “Today, it is a fascinating example of a true medieval monastery, offering some interesting sights.
“There may be vegetation growth on the building and some vandalism.”
“Given all the legends surrounding this place, I think it will be a popular hangout for young thrill seekers.”
