MADRID (Reuters) – U.S. automaker Ford plans to cut 1,100 jobs at its plant in Valencia, eastern Spain, a company spokeswoman said on Friday.

The layoffs, of which the unions have been informed, are part of the company’s changes to its car production line-up in Europe, the spokeswoman said.

“Ford will work constructively with its union partners to reduce the effects of the layoffs on employees, their families and the local community.”

The company has decided to stop assembling Galaxy minivans and S-Max station wagons in Valencia.

Last year, Ford said it was pushing back its production investments in Europe as part of a review of its outlook on the continent.

The automaker had, however, indicated that it would stick to a plan to launch production of electric vehicles at its Spanish plant later in the decade. This plan would lead to job cuts, he said.
