Seven people, including an unborn baby, were shot dead Thursday night at the center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the German city of Hamburg, German police said.

According to the information, the armed man was allegedly 35-year-old Philipp F, a former member of the religious community, who was facing psychological problems.

“He is a former member of Jehovah’s Witnesses who voluntarily left the community about a year and a half ago, but apparently not on good terms,” said Thomas Radszuweit, Hamburg’s head of state security.

During the briefing, German police said four men and two women were killed in the shooting. Also, a seven-month pregnant woman was shot in the abdomen by the gunman, causing the fetus to die but herself to live. All the dead were German nationals. Also, eight people were injured, four of them seriously.

The attacker allegedly acted alone by opening fire through a window, as can be seen in a video that was released, and then killed himself.

The first emergency call came in at 21:04 local time (20:04 GMT) on Thursday, reporting shots fired at the building on Deelböge Street in the Gross Borstel district, police said. The suspect who had a gun license- after the shooting ran to the first floor as he fled. The police asked him to surrender, but he took his own life.

The police knew about the psychological problems of the perpetrator

Police in Hamburg had received an anonymous tip two months ago about the 35-year-old assailant, but their subsequent investigation found no cause for concern and so the gun was not seized.
