(News Bulletin 247) – Thales announces that it has achieved a world first with the unprecedented takeover of an ESA demonstration satellite.

As part of the third edition of CYSAT, a European event dedicated to cybersecurity in the space industry, which is being held from 26 to 27 April 2023 in Paris (Station F), the European Space Agency (ESA) organized on the representative bench of the satellite a simulation of the remote takeover of the OPS-SAT satellite, an ESA nanosatellite for demonstration purposes.

The Thales cybersecurity team took up the challenge by identifying vulnerabilities that could disrupt the operation of the ESA satellite. The participants implemented different ethical hacking techniques to take control of the sensor management system: geolocation system, attitude management system1 and camera.

This exercise demonstrates the need for advanced cyber resilience, applied to the very specific environment of satellites.

‘ This unprecedented exercise allows everyone to become aware of the flaws in order to better remedy them and to adapt the solutions in order to improve the cyber resilience of satellites and space programs in general, from the ground to space. ‘ Pierre-Yves Jolivet, VP Cyber Solutions at Thales.
