(News Bulletin 247) – Lockheed Martin announces that the US Army has awarded it a $4.79 billion contract to produce GMLRS rockets and associated equipment for the US Army and its international partners.
“We are working closely with our military customers and supply chain partners to increase production capacity and meet the urgent need for this highly reliable, combat-proven rocket,” said Jay. Price, Precision Fires vice president for Lockheed Martin missiles and fire control.
The GMLRS is an all-weather rocket designed for rapid deployment that offers precision strike and range unattainable by most conventional weapons, Lockheed Martin points out.
This ammunition is the main weapon of the family of HIMARS and MLRS launchers produced by Lockheed Martin. It includes a GPS-assisted inertial guidance system and small maneuvering ‘canards’ on the front of the rocket to improve its maneuverability and accuracy.
