(News Bulletin 247) – BASF is expanding its ecovio line by adding a certified home and industrial compostable grade for cold and hot food packaging.

The new ecovio 70 PS14H6 extrusion coating grade is approved for food contact and has excellent barrier properties against liquids, greases and mineral oils, as well as stability at boiling water temperature (up to ‘at 100°C).

It is also characterized by excellent adhesion to many types of paper and cardboard. It therefore enables paper applications such as cups and jars for dairy products, packaging for sandwiches, cereal bars, bowls and trays, etc.

After use, food packaging made of paper coated with ecovio 70 PS14H6 can be composted in domestic or industrial composting facilities.

“By being certified home and plant compostable, our new ecovio grade expands end-of-life options for paper-based packaging,” says Michael Bernhard Schick of Global Biopolymers Marketing at BASF.
