MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (Reuters) – Alphabet on Wednesday unveiled artificial intelligence (AI) products developed in part to compete with Microsoft in this market.

Google’s parent company is seeking to equip its search engine with so-called “generative” AI, making it possible to answer questions by producing texts of a quality similar to those composed by a human.

“We are reinventing all of our products, including our search engine,” Alphabet’s chief executive told the group’s annual conference.

Sundar Pichai said ‘generative’ AI would be integrated into Google’s search engine as well as other products, like Gmail, where it could compose messages, or Google Photos, where it could make big changes to pictures.

These announcements come after the launch last November of the chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, a company supported by Microsoft.

“Generative” artificial intelligence can, using existing data, compose original content in the form of text, images or computer code.
