(News Bulletin 247) – Rolls-Royce has successfully completed the first trials of its UltraFan technology demonstrator at its Derby site in the United Kingdom. The first tests were carried out using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
“This is a historic moment for Rolls-Royce – it is the first time in 54 years that the aero-engine manufacturer has tested an entirely new engine architecture,” the group said.
‘Confirming the capability of all the technologies incorporated in the demonstrator is a big step towards improving the efficiency of current and future aero engines.’
The UltraFan improves the performance of the Trent XWB by 10%. In the shorter term, it is possible to transfer technologies from the UltraFan development program to current Trent engines.
Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO of Rolls-Royce, said: ‘The UltraFan demonstrator is a game-changer – the technologies we are testing in this program have the potential to improve the engines of today and tomorrow. Coupled with sustainable aviation fuels, the engines will be key to achieving the industry goal of net zero flights by 2050’.
