(News Bulletin 247) – Moderna today announced that clinical trial data has confirmed that its updated COVID-19 vaccine, pending approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration, is generating a 8.7 times higher vaccination against Varian BA.2.86 (Pirola).
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says the highly mutated BA.2.86 variant may be more likely to cause infection in people who have had COVID-19 before or been vaccinated with previous vaccines. The CDC adds that updated COVID-19 vaccines can be effective in reducing severe disease and hospitalizations.
‘These results demonstrate that our updated COVID-19 vaccine generates a strong human immune response against the highly mutated BA.2.86 variant. Our previously reported results also showed an equally effective response against the EG.5 and FL.1.5 variants. .1, these data confirm that our updated COVID-19 vaccine will continue to be an important protective tool as we approach the fall vaccination season,” said Stephen Hoge, MD, president of Moderna.
