(News Bulletin 247) – The Paris index ended slightly down 0.22% on Tuesday at 7,485.73 points during a quiet session.

After five consecutive sessions in the green, the CAC 40 marked time on Tuesday. The flagship index of the Paris Stock Exchange ended down 0.22%, falling back below 7,500 points, to 7,485.73 points.

Tuesday’s day did not bring any good surprises or elements likely to allow the Parisian market to continue its good momentum. On Wall Street, the American indices are also falling. The S&P 500 lost 0.20% shortly before the close of the European markets, after having gone eight sessions without a drop (it had stagnated on August 12).

“No market moves in a straight line, so it would be healthy for the market to take a break for a day or two in the near future,” Matt Maley of Miller Tabak, an investment firm, told Bloomberg.

Voltalia suffers

Investors are therefore giving in to a wait-and-see attitude ahead of the week’s major events. The “minutes” (report) of the latest monetary policy meeting of the American Federal Reserve (Fed) will be published on Wednesday evening. On Friday, the chairman of the American central bank, Jerome Powell, will speak at the Jackson Hole symposium in Wyoming.

“The market will be watching for any clues on how the FOMC (the Fed’s monetary policy committee, editor’s note) will approach the timing, pace and depth of upcoming rate cuts, and any substantial signal could move markets significantly,” Deutsche Bank said.

In terms of values, the variations remained contained on the CAC 40. Renault, the biggest increase, gained 1.4% while Pernod Ricard, the biggest decrease, lost 2.2%.

Outside the CAC 40, renewable energy producer Voltalia fell by 18.2%, after warning that production cuts in Brazil would penalize its gross operating profit in 2024.

On other markets, the euro gained 0.1% against the dollar to $1.1103. Oil lost ground. The October contract on North Sea Brent lost 0.5% to $77.26 a barrel while the September contract on WTI listed in New York fell 0.5% to $74.03 a barrel.
