Open it reduction of VAT on bread products from 13% to 6%, as bakers ask so to keep prices downleft the Minister of Rural Development and Food, George Georgantas, while at the same time assuring that it exists absolute product adequacy in our country.

“It’s something that the government, which is above the problems, will look at as a whole, understanding that we need to protect the vulnerable consumer, whom we need to find various ways to support in this difficult time.”stressed, clarifying that the “The government has not committed to specific moves in the near future, but it is always above the problem.” “We are watching and we will not hesitate to make any intervention needed. “VAT on feed and fertilizers has already been reduced to 6%”, stressed speaking to ERT.

According to the Minister, a major issue that arises and which will further affect developing countries, is the particularly increased price of products, as the price per kilo of wheat was 20 to 22 cents and now goes to 50 cents. “It has doubled, but at the moment we have a stabilization and a small tendency to de-escalate, to about 10%, because this year’s production is entering the market”he said. “Bread has grown by about 20% on average since the pre-war period in Ukraine and bakers have absorbed as much as they could from the increase in raw materials”he said.

Asked if the policy will be chosen with “Pricing bread”, countered that this is issue of the Ministry of Development. “The government is close to announcing the details of the major electricity problem that affects the overall cost of all products. To launch this, to see it in practice, is a dynamic process of dealing with problems. We are watching the issues, we are keeping forces“, Said characteristically Mr. Georgantas.

He pointed out that with the current data, Europe is not in danger of a food crisis – but for the next periods everything will depend on whether the war in Ukraine, from the decisions that Russia will take in relation to its own production and of course with the developments on the front of the climate crisis.

“We have absolute sufficiency in Greece and because we have a platform where stocks of specific products are declared – flour, feed, raw materials, etc. – we know that there is a very high sufficiency of months”, said the minister, clarifying that two factors contribute to this, the smooth crop production and, above all, the operation of the supply chain. “If the supply chain works as it should, the small losses we have from Ukraine’s reduced capacity are covered by other countries and alternative markets, such as Canada and the United States. “I do not see any particular concern, as long as the supply chain operates, the Union trade helps us a lot,” he explained.

Finally, the Minister of Rural Development said that to date, 200 million euros have been allocated from national resources to support farmers and stockbreeders in the face of the crisis and additional European funds are expected in this direction.
