“Since 2019, I have been elected MEP. When the first instance decision was found, I was in Belgium for six months. I never tried to leave and evade justice. I was present ‘regularly’ and uninterruptedly to the competent consular authorities three times a month and I informed the Department at ‘Eleftherios Venizelos’ every time I came to Athens. “Apart from the fact that I have the headquarters, in essence, I have lost it,” said the accused, among other things.
As he claimed, his associates in Athens and Brussels are facing big problems with him, who, as he stated, “the only crime they committed is that they are my associates”.
Continuing, the accused pleaded not guilty, saying that he had not committed any crime. “He went on a hunger strike in Domokou Prison to proceed and become the Court of Appeal. “If this Court of Appeal is interrupted, postponed or if it lasts for a long time, I will have served the sentence completely unjustly and it will be as if it does not need to be done”.
He also said: “If the court finds you innocent, if it finds that I have a mitigating factor I have served most of the sentence.” Concluding, he told the court: “Give me the opportunity to perform my duties as an MEP.”
Taking the floor the prosecutor requested the rejection of the request of I. Lagos, saying that nothing has changed from the data taken into account for his imprisonment. He even said that all detainees suffer economic and social damage. The court reserved the right to rule.
A similar request was submitted by the accused for joining a criminal organization and complicity in the murder of Fyssa, Elpidoforos Kanaritis, citing family issues.
The prosecutor reserved the right to propose on this request, while Anastasios Pantazis, nuclear chief of Perama, who has been convicted for joining a criminal organization and for the case of the attempted murder of the Egyptian fisherman, as well as another accused, also requested suspension. The prosecutor also reserved these requests.
The court has been on a continuous break since the morning, looking for lawyers who will take over the defendants who have no defense. However, as the president explained, no lawyer is taking over and for that reason, as he said, in order not to waste time, he proceeded to examine the requests of the accused.
