Mondelez will transfer part of the production of Toblerone triangular chocolate from Switzerland to Slovakia at the end of next year, and will have to remove the “Swiss” attribute from the brand’s packaging.
“From the end of 2023, we will add limited production of Toblerone in Slovakia,” Mondelez spokeswoman Livia Kolmitz said in an emailed statement Thursday, confirming a report by Swiss outlet SRF.
Food companies face high cost inflation, but Kolmitz did not link the change to those pressures. She mentioned strong growth, which means the company will increase capacity at its production facility in Bern, Switzerland.
“Bern is at the center of the Toblerone story, we will continue to make our 100g bars there,” Kolmitz told Reuters, ruling out job cuts.
Toblerone was first launched in 1908 and has been produced exclusively in Switzerland since the early 1990s.
Under strict Swiss labeling rules, chocolate made abroad cannot be called “Swiss”, and Mondelez will have to remove that reference.
“We will relaunch the Toblerone packaging starting this summer [no Hemisfério Norte]saying the brand was ‘established in Switzerland,'” said Kolmitz, pointing to the brand’s UK website to give an idea of what the new packaging would look like.
