An old stone bridge was found in Stafidokampos, Ilia

Despite the initial assumption that it was an ancient bridge, it is estimated to be 100 years old

One stone bridge came to light during the work done on Raisin raisin of Ilia for the biological treatment network on a village road. The initial assumptions were that this is one of the three stone bridges mentioned in local myths, part of an irrigation project of antiquity, (as mentioned in a relevant post by George Alevizopoulos, a resident of the village). However, those involved in the project deny that it is an ancient bridge but much younger than around 1920, while sources of EFA Ilia stated that there is no similar find of archaeological interest in the area.

Mr. Alevizopoulos’s post:

“The myth of the stone bridge. Digging for the network the biological treatment on Mikis Theodorakis Street at the junction of Vassilis Tsitsanis Street, one of the three ancient Stone Bridges was revealed that the legend from the stories of our grandfathers had reached us. The usefulness of the bridges in the plain was threefold.

First, water was channeled south of the village through the ancient irrigation ditch that irrigated the fields on the north side of the river Pinios, whose water supply with a small diversion dam was located three to four kilometers east of the ancient Ilida and ended at the Stafidokamos archolis.

All the fields from the current crunchy well to Stafidokampos were irrigated from this furrow which is still intact in many parts of its route. The second utility was the channeling of water in winter because the system through the irrigation ditches also served as a drainage of rainwater.

And of course the third utility was the smooth passage of pedestrian animals and horse-drawn carriages of the road from the current bridge of the river Pinios in Agia Mavra to Stafidokampos and Stafidokampos Andravida “, mentions features.
