The most common symptoms are sneezing, snoring, difficulty breathing, a deformed nose, or the presence of blood or other discharge from the nose or mouth
Dogs are four to five times more likely to in relation to dogs, to develop contagious cancer in their nose or mouth, as a new British scientific study shows. This is due to the greater habit of male dogs to smell or lick the genitals of female dogs than the other way around, which favors the spread of this particular cancer mainly in dogs.
The cancer in question (canine venereal transmissible neoplasm) is unusual because it is transmissible by contact and its cancer cells are transferred from one animal to another. Transmission is often done by mating of dogs, while it sometimes manifests itself on the face (mainly mouth and nose) and on the skin. The genital form of the disease is equally common in males and females.
The researchers from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, led by Dr Andrea Starkova and Professor Elizabeth Murchison, who made the relevant publication in the Veterinary Journal “Veterinary Record”analyzed nearly 2,000 cases of this cancer, of which 32 specifically involved the muzzle (all 27 in male dogs and only five in females).
Canine transmissible venereal neoplasm (CTVT) it is estimated that it appeared several thousand years ago from the cells of a single dog. The cancer survived the latter’s death, before spreading to other dogs. Today, this contagious cancer is found in dog populations worldwide and is considered the oldest continuous cancer in nature. It is more common in countries that have a lot of stray dogs.
The most common symptoms of nose and mouth cancer are sneezing, snoring, difficulty breathing, a deformed nose, or the presence of blood or other discharge from the nose or mouth. However, Strakova stated that “treatment of this cancer is very effective using the chemotherapy drug Vinctristine and the vast majority of dogs recover».
In nature, transmissible cancers have also been found in the Tasmanian Devil, as well as in bivalves such as mussels and clams.
