Large anti-graffiti operations in Athens – Before and after

A new, more beautiful look was acquired by Larissa square (opposite the Station) and the Dexamenis park in Ano Petralonafollowing the completion of two – large-scale – anti-graffiti operations carried out by the cleaning department of the Municipality of Athens, as part of the ongoing effort to remove smears, paints and spray paints from the walls of the city.

Specifically, in the busy Larissa square, a total of 460 sq.m. were cleaned. stone and marble surface. The removal process, with high water pressure and a special solvent (145 liters in total), had to be repeated several times, as the paints and sprays from the graffiti covered the specific surface for a long time, making the restoration work difficult. Nevertheless, the operation, which lasted about a week with the participation of nine municipal workers, was successfully completed and the square has regained, after many years, the clean appearance that befits a public space.

An operation of a similar scale was carried out in the previous days in Dexamenis park, in the neighborhood of Ano Petraloni. The stone and marble walls surrounding the park were vandalized for many years by spray paint, special markers and paints. Combined with the sun and high temperatures that had affected the paints, the operation of removing them was particularly difficult, but it was completed effectively. For cleaning a total of 240 sq.m. surface area, 173 liters of special solvent were used and eight cleaning workers had to work for 7 days.

In his statement, the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannisemphasized: “It is the first time that a municipal authority gives so much weight to the effort to change the image of the city’s smudged and abandoned walls. For 2.5 years now with coordinated operations, we have been intensively intervening in the center and the neighborhoods, reforming places that for many years had been left at the mercy of illegal graffiti. With all the modern means at our disposal, we continue to upgrade the public space, for the benefit of Athenians and visitors, creating a more humane, dignified and beautiful city, both to live in and to visit”.

The Deputy Mayor of cleaning and recycling Municipality of Athens, Nikos Avramidis, states: “Cleaning workers fight a tough “battle” all year long with smudges, paints and sprays on the walls of Athens. With successive actions, we have managed to clean more than 33,000 sq.m. surface of vandalized walls, in the center and the neighborhoods. We continue the effort with the same enthusiasm.”

The anti-graffiti operations of the Municipality of Athens have already been completed in dozens of places in the city, such as in Stadiumthe Academythe Athenaits pedestrian street Hermouher Apostle Paulhim Lycabettusthe Platethe “Melina” Cultural Center etc. It is noted that after each work, a special anti-graffiti material and hydrophobic paint is placed, in order to prevent the creation of new pollution in the places that have already been cleaned.
