Copo Cheio: Juan Caloto beer bar, Esconderijo presents an elaborate drink list

by

Juan Caloto’s great beers are not the only reasons to visit the Esconderijo bar, the brand’s headquarters, located in Vila Clementino, south of São Paulo.

Located on a quiet corner of Gandavo street, Esconderijo recently launched a winter drinks menu, courtesy of bartender Felipe Damazio.

This careful look at cocktails has accompanied the bar since its opening at the end of 2020, but the new menu doesn’t fall short of any house specializing in the alchemy of spirits.

As with the beers, the drinks are also named after the best spaghetti western films, such as Perdición del Xerife, made with banana-infused bourbon, stout and bitters reduction, and a small cube of dulce de leche, served in a whiskey glass, for R$38.

All six drinks that make up the menu are made with premium drinks, such as the slightly acidic Fim de los Dias, with VSOP brandy, Pedro Ximenes sherry and orange bitters, for R$50.

There is also the Morricone Sour, a reinterpretation of the classic Bloody Mary, with vodka infused with basil, Benedictine liqueur, lemon, a pinch of salt and tomato powder, the lightest on the menu, for R$35. it was Cabana de Caça, with bourbon, maple and black tea, complemented with a vaporization of bitter, which gives it a smoky aroma, and Moonshine (a kind of corn whiskey, well alcoholic) aged in amburana. Served in a brandy glass, it costs R$38.

There are, and if you prefer, there are beers, of course, like the dry stout O’Sullivan, the double IPA La Montanha no És para Niños, or the recent collaboration with Tank Brewpub, a fruited sour called La Piscadela de Cotton Eye Bill. Next chapters to follow.
