by

Serious fire fronts appeared in Achaia and Crete with the fire department fighting hard to tame the fires that broke out. Experts speak of a major ecological disaster in Crete.

The Fire Department remains on alert after the occurrence of serious incidents fires noted earlier in Crete and Achaia.

The latest information speaks of an improved picture compared to the previous hours in Achaia with the flames having, at this stage, moved away from the residential area. At the same time, the two fronts of the fire, in the villages, have been checked Saint George and Saktouri. In any case, the fire brigade is on its feet for the risk of rekindling in the Rethimno as winds in the area remain strong.

In any case, the fire that broke out at noon on Saturday in southern Rethymnon between Orne and Kryas Vrysis with a parallel front in Rodakino has already caused irreparable damage, which the fire department managed to control early this afternoon.

Earlier it was evacuated for precautionary reasons Orne settlement as the fire came very close to him.

Speaking on SKAI 100.3 radio, the mayor of Agios Vassiliou Ioannis Tatarakis spoke of a biblical disaster, pointing out that thousands of acres of olive trees, many beehives, sheep and vines have been incinerated.

He appealed to as many feed companies as possible to help as farmers no longer have anywhere to graze their animals.

Earlier he had even expressed the assessment that the fires were caused by arson.

In the meantime, the scientists of the National Observatory of Athens S. Dafis, G. Kyros and K. Lagouvardos with their article on the official page of the service, published a high-resolution satellite image, which reveals as they say: “…the extent of the destruction caused by the forest fire in South Rethymnon. Almost 15,000 hectares of land were reduced to ash in less than 24 hours, with the European satellite reading taken at 12:10 noon on Saturday 16/7, while there were still active foci (yellow and orange spots)”.

As they note: “The forest fire in South Rethymnon that started at noon on Friday, July 15, 2022, near Krya Vrysi, caused a great ecological and economic disaster. Gusty northerly winds continuing to blow on the afternoon of Saturday 16/7 are making it difficult for the fire services as there are constant flare-ups. The map below shows the thermal anomalies on the ground as recorded by satellites on the evening of Friday 7/15 and Saturday 7/16. Satellite measurements show that the active fronts on Saturday afternoon have significantly reduced in extent, but the risk of flare-ups remains high due to strong winds. An assessment of the burned area will be carried out on Saturday night using higher resolution satellite data».
