Public opinion worldwide is in shock from the air tragedy that occurred in Greek airspace

The news of the crash of the Antonov transport aircraft in Eleftheroupoli Kavala made the rounds of the world through international news agencies, informative websites, newspapers and television networks, with many of these media quoting APE-MPE as their source or public television.

The French Agency (AFP) reproduces statements made by the residents of the area to the correspondents of APE-MBE and ERT, as well as the announcement made this morning to journalists by the lieutenant general of the Fire Brigade Marios Apostolidis that firefighters equipped with special measuring instruments approached the site of the aircraft’s impact and saw up close the fuselage and other parts of it scattered in the fields.

The extensive AFP report, which is reproduced by several French media, including the newspaper Le Monde, also includes the statements of Serbian and Ukrainian officials. Monde points out that “many residents videotaped, in the middle of the night, the end of the Antonov flight, which was already on fire before crashing to the ground, near the city of Kavala”.

Eight crew members were killed in the crash of a Ukrainian transporter in northern Greece, headlines the news agency Reuters, which also refers to the search made in the wreckage of the Antonov An-12 with a special unmanned aircraft.

“The pilot reported that he was experiencing a problem with one of the engines and requested to make an emergency landing,” writes the Associated Press agency, in a response reproduced by several American newspapers, such as the Washington Post.

Similar is the response of the Turkish Anadolu Agency, which cites the Civil Aviation Service and notes that the aircraft was headed from Serbia to Bangladesh and its captain requested permission for an emergency landing but failed to reach the airport.

The statements of Marios Apostolidis to APE-MPE are relayed by the Chinese, official Xinhua agency, which also reports that the Greek authorities were alerted due to the dangerous materials carried by the Antonov and the risk of toxic fumes.

The Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform features the news on its front page, among the many reports on the war in Ukraine, and carries the announcement by the Ukrainian company Meridian that all eight crew members were Ukrainian citizens.

“Scene of disaster after the crash in Greece of a plane carrying military ammunition” is the title of the American network CNN, which cites ERT and presents many photos and videos, while also broadcasting the condolences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the UK BBC website, the issue is second in “European” news after heatwave. Following the statements of eyewitnesses, Greek and Serbian officials, the network carries the confirmation of a Bangladesh army representative that the plane was carrying training mortars bought from Serbia, for the training of the country’s soldiers and border guards. The plane would make stops in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and India before reaching its final destination, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

The Guardian newspaper writes that “videos and eyewitness accounts suggest the Antonov An-12 caught fire while still in the air.” The publication cites statements from witnesses who told APE-MPE that they heard loud explosions while flying in the area on Saturday night.

“A Ukrainian aircraft carrying Serbian weapons to Bangladesh crashed in Greece,” writes the Spanish newspaper El Pais, which hosts statements by the mayor of Pangai, Filippo Anastasiadis.

“Panic in Greece… An aircraft carrying “dangerous” cargo crashed, all the crew members were killed”, finally writes the Turkish Hurriyet, which reproduces the announcement of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior as well as the statements of eyewitnesses to APE-MPE that they heard the explosions shortly after before midnight Saturday through Sunday.
