The new GLC is only available as hybrid vehicle, either as a plug-in hybrid model or as a mild hybrid with 48 volt technology and an integrated starter-dynamo. The engine range consists exclusively of four-cylinder engines from its current modular engine family Mercedes-Benz.
Accordingly, with demand-based electrification, the engine range contributes significantly to the flexibility of the international production network. Four of these engines are mild hybrid units that are intelligently boosted at low revs by a second-generation integrated starter-dynamo. Three more engine versions are fully hybrid units with an additional electric power of 100 kW and an electric range of more than 100 km.

The system includes the 48 volt electrical circuit, which allows functions such as “rolling”, boost or energy recovery and, therefore, significant fuel savings. In addition, starting the engines is very quick and comfortable thanks to the integrated starter-dyno, making the Start-Stop function almost imperceptible to the driver, as well as the transition from free rolling with the engine off to strong acceleration with power from the engine. At idle, the intelligent interaction between the integrated starter-dynamo and the internal combustion engine ensures extremely smooth operation.
At the same time, the new model has also acquired the plug-in hybrid drive system of the fourth generation. Utilizing the same basic engines, electrification has taken another big step. With an electric power now of 100 kW, a torque of 440 Nm and a total electric range of more than 100 km (WLTP), daily journeys in and out of town can be made entirely electric.
Two driving programs allow the driver to use the capabilities of the plug-in drive system. battery Hold prioritizes maintaining the state of charge of the high-voltage battery, e.g. when planned for later driving in the city center or in a low emission zone. The hybrid drive system selects the appropriate program depending on driving conditions and distance.
The other program is electric for electric driving up to 140 km/h, adjustable energy recovery, activation of the internal combustion engine after the pressure point of the gas pedal. In the Hybrid and Electric driving modes as well as Battery Hold, the ECO assistance system also evaluates the route data and supports the maximum possible efficiency and energy recovery depending on the route. If the navigation map or the sensors and cameras detect, for example, a roundabout, a hairpin bend, a sharp bend, a junction, a hill, a vehicle in front or a speed limit, the ECO assistance system calculates the optimum speed of vehicle based on distance, speed and gradient.
