Dynamic tests are carried out from the Ag station. Marinas to the Municipal Theater, in the context of the upcoming operation of the extension of the Line to Piraeus.
The operation of the extension is just around the corner Line 3 of the metro to the port and the Municipal Theater of Piraeus with the final trial routes starting today so that everything is ready and given to the passenger public next September.
With the completion of the project and the commissioning of the “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theater” stations, an increase in total passenger traffic on the metro network to 132,000 citizens per day is expected, reducing both the traffic of cars. vehicles by 23,000 per day as well as carbon dioxide emissions by 120 tons per day. It is noted that the total time from the port to the airport will be traveled by metro in just 55 minutes. It is important to emphasize that with the completion of the project, a particularly important Transportation Center is planned to be created at the Piraeus station, functionally combining two metro lines (Lines 1 and 3), the port, the suburban railway and the extension of the tram to Piraeus (5 .4 km of single line and 12 stations), thus facilitating transfers between all means of transport. In addition, the connection that will arise between the port of Piraeus and the airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” through Line 3 of the metro, will provide both special development benefits to the wider area of Athens and Piraeus as well as to the national economy in general.
It is recalled that the extension of Line 3 of the “Agia Marina-Piraeus” metro as a whole includes a 7.6 km long tunnel and 6 new modern stations (Agia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Piraeus and Municipal Theater) as well as seven intermediate ones ventilation shafts. This is an investment of height 730,000,000 euros in areas of the Municipality of Piraeus and the municipalities of the wider region (Nicaea, Korydallos, Ag. Varvara) which currently have severe traffic problems and a low level of service from the Mass Transportation. Already on July 6, 2020, the first 3 stations Agia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikaia were handed over to the passenger public.
Trial routes – Which stations are closing
The preliminary, test itineraries of Line 3 of the metro in view of the commissioning of the three new stations “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theater” have started three weeks ago, while the final test itineraries start today and are expected to judge the perfection of the extension and to give the green light for the commercial operation of the line.
In particular, from today Saturday 30/07/2022 until Sunday 07/08/2022 and from 27 – 28/08/2022 the Metro stations “Nicaia”, “Korydallos” and “Ag. Varvara” will remain closed and Line 3 will operate in the section “Airport – Ag. Marina».
The traffic regulations on Line 3 of the metro are put into effect, due to the performance of dynamic tests from the Ag station. Marinas to the Municipal Theater, in the context of the upcoming operation of the extension of the Line to Piraeus. Passengers during the above periods will be served at the “St. Marina – Nice” from the temporary bus line “X50 Ag. Marina – Nice” with the time distance between vehicles during peak hours being 6 minutes.
More specifically, the trains will run continuous test routes from the station “Agia Marina” to the current terminal “Nicaia” and then passing through the new stations “Maniatika”, “Piraeus”, “Municipal Theater” to connect the extension with the previous 3 stations and by extension with the network. The most important element that will be examined is the systems that ensure the smooth operation of the new extension. At the same time, there is continuous work related to the collection and cleaning of the stations. Also, at the port of Piraeus, at street level, above the “Piraeus” station, intensive works are being carried out to return the road to traffic in the section from Kapodistriou to Proastiakou station. In parallel with the operation of the line, the square will be dedicated to the Municipal Theater. The square will be returned to its original form with the marbles it had since it has been classified as a preserved building. In the square there will also be points in the form of a well which will represent the operation of the Horse System.
The three new stations
The three new stations are expected to change the traffic data of the city. “Maniatika” station is located in a particularly densely populated area and is a stone’s throw from Keratsini.
The “Piraeus” station is located almost below the current station of Line 1 (Piraeus-Kifisia) and will contribute to making this point the largest transport station in Attica, having 2 metro stations, a suburban train, buses, trolleys, trams, and the coastal ships.
The “Municipal Theater” station is the new terminus of Line 3. It is located opposite the Piraeus Municipal Theater and the town hall. It serves almost the entire city of Piraeus and especially the commercial zone up to Grigoriou Lambrakis and Pasalimani. It will also be connected to the Tram stop and many bus and trolley lines.
With the start of operation of the three new stations, it is expected that several bus lines connecting with the Municipalities of Nikaia and Korydallos will be cut, which, as was done in other extensions, will be converted into inter-municipal lines and feeders to the Metro stations that serve the area.
