Intervention of the Municipality of Alimos to name a street after the hero pilot Sifis Migadis – His story – Video

by

With his announcement, the Mayor of Alimos informed that one of the streets near the former airport will be named after the hero pilot.

His response was immediate Mayor of Alimos, Andreas Kondylis in a post on social media that “reminded” the heroic act of the pilot Sifi Migadis who 44 years ago managed to prevent a plane crash that would have cost the lives of hundreds of people. With his announcement, the Mayor of Alimos informed that one of the streets near the former airport will be named after the hero pilot.

It all started on Tuesday, August 9, when there were reports on social media that on the same day, exactly 44 years ago, on August 9, 1978, a BOEING 747, the Olympic Zeus “scraped” the Pani hill of Alimos, passing only 2 meters and 74 centimeters above its imminent crash.

The Olympic Zeus of “Olympic” with 348 passengers and 20 crew members “lost” one of its engines during takeoff. Pilot Sifis Migadis and co-pilot Konstantinos Fikardos battled to keep the overweight beast in the air while flying only 48 meters off the ground, even breaking aerials on rooftops, with the best-case scenario being its crash on Mount Aigaleo.

Shortly before the critical point, Sifis Migadis managed to turn, empty the fuel and with his soul in his mouth, to land again, after 20 minutes of terror, but without any of the passengers noticing a thing! The two heroes succeeded against all odds and Boeing’s specifications, acting with composure and courage to avert our greatest national aviation tragedy. It is characteristic that in Boeing’s simulators simulating this particular flight, the Olympic Zeus was crashing!

We should mention that Sifis Migadis had fought in the battle of Crete, in 1941, while he was fired from Olympiaki during the dictatorship period in our country and was rehired in the post-colonial period and was one of the pilots-symbols for his life attitude and struggles. Reporting the incident 44 years later has led many users to comment that it is unfair that the state does not honor such heroes.

Immediately the Mayor of Alimos, Andreas Kondylis, in a post on social media, announced that:

“A real feat, bordering on the impossible. Indeed, it is worth naming a street “Sifi Migadis”, and even close to the former Airport. We will probably be given the opportunity now that the investment-redevelopment will open passages to the park and some new roads within Alimos.”

So, forty-four years after his heroic act, Sifis Migadis will have his way… and even close to the airport!
