by

This is the most difficult operation to remove a bear, according to locals.

An unprecedented situation was called to manage, late last night, the Immediate Intervention Team Kastoriaon the occasion of appearance bear with her two babies in the city mall.

It was about half an hour before midnight when the alarm was sounded after residents reported to the police and people from environmental organizations about a bear with her two cubs walking in a lakeside area of the city, just 500 meters from the District building, in the “heart” of the new shopping center.

“When I got to the spot I saw the bear with her cubs at a lakeside spot across from the mall. The animals, especially the mother, were clearly stressed by the presence of the young children and the people who had gathered,” Nikos Panagiotopoulos, a member of the immediate intervention team for the management of such incidents of wild animals that come into contact with the urban tissue.

The first thing that was done was to remove people at least 100 meters from the development of the incident and to block the area as a precaution. With the help of sound means, such as horns, firecrackers and shots in the air from special pistols that the team has for this purpose, Nikos Panagiotopoulos and Vassilis Girkas from the Kastoria Forest Service began to harass the animal to move away from the scene. At the same time, with the help of the police, who had previously cordoned off the area, a corridor was opened from the place where the bear was with her babies to the exit of the city. It was around 2 a.m. when the bear and her cubs were finally led out of the city, into the Kastorian countryside, after an operation that lasted about 2.5 hours.

Nikos Panagiotopoulos refers to the decisive contribution of the men of EL.AS. who throughout the operation was in direct coordination with the immediate intervention team, removing the public and creating the conditions for the orderly removal of the animal, by blocking off the area.

It is recalled that a week ago, with another special operation of the environmental organization “Kallisto” and the Immediate Intervention Team, Platonis, a male bear that was swimming across the lake to find its food in the Kastoria Peninsula, was removed.

The summer season finds bears on the move both foraging and finding a spatial environment they would like to secure as habitat.
