In the first seven months of 2022, passenger traffic at Chania’s “Ioannis Daskalogiannis” airport “took off”, surpassing the traffic of 2019 and the pre-pandemic period.
Aircraft flights moved accordingly, which were also more than in the first seven months of 2019.
A four-year record
According to the official traffic data presented by APE-MPE, in the first seven months of 2022, (January – July), 1,744,597 passengers were transported through Chania airport, compared to 601,875 passengers, who were transported in the first seven months of 2021.
At the same time, during the same period of 2022, 12,596 flights were carried out through “Ioannis Daskalogiannis”, compared to 6,229 flights in 2021.
The increase in passenger traffic in 2022 compared to 2021 was 189.9% and in aircraft traffic 102.2%.
It is impressive that in 2019, a year in which Greek tourism broke all records, 1,639,323 passengers on 11,353 flights were transported from Chania airport during the first seven months.
Increase in tourism
The traffic data of the Chania airport during the first seven months of 2022, confirm the forecasts for a significant increase in tourism in Chania and Crete in comparison with the corresponding data of the same period of the previous years processed by APE-MPE and derived from the statistics of the Fraport airport management company.
In the first seven months of 2020, the pandemic had “grounded” air traffic in Chania as well.
It is typical that through “Daskalogiannis”, during that period, 256,157 passengers were transported with only 2,912 flights.
British first
Regarding the nationalities of foreign tourists in Chania during the first seven months of 2022, the top five are consistently British, Danish, Norwegian, German and Polish.
Regarding the traffic data of Chania airport during July this year, a total of 548,357 passengers were handled by international flights and 72,071 passengers by domestic flights.
