THE Turkey with the threat of violence he pressed them 38 immigrants to come to Greece, the Minister of Immigration and Asylum denounced, Notis Mitarakis from Evros.

Mr. Mitarakis emphasized that from their statements it appears that they were pushed towards the islet by the Turkish authorities, with the Turkish coast guard bringing them to the bank of the Evros “and with the threat of violence, he forced them to come to Greece”. He also said that the Turkish authorities officially arrested them and did not give them the right to apply for international protection as Turkey is committed to do by International Law.

For five-year-old child who lost his life, the minister emphasized that the tragic incident happened on Turkish soil and that the Greek side will act through the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent, “so that the child’s body can be found on the Turkish island and she can be buried with dignity by her family.”

Mr. Mitarakis emphasized that as soon as the immigrants sent their mark, the Greek authorities mobilized, located them and took them to the police station. They were given medical treatment and are all in good health.

“According to their statement, they entered Greek territory for the first time on August 14. They hid for a day then sent their mark. A woman who is pregnant was taken to the hospital as a precaution.” he said characteristically.

The minister’s statement in detail

“A group of 38 migrants was found. Thirty-five Syrians and three Palestinians who entered Greek territory. According to their statement, they entered Greek territory for the first time on 14/8, hid for a day, then sent their signal. When they were tracked down by the Greek authorities, they immediately mobilized, the group was found, brought here to the outpost, we provided medical treatment, they are all in very good health. A pregnant woman was taken to the hospital as a precaution. They are in good health,” said the Minister of Immigration and Asylum Notis Mitarakis, during his visit to Evros.

“The second very important thing that emerges from their statements is that they came from the Turkish side of the river and were pushed towards the islet by the Turkish authorities. Officially, the Turkish authorities arrested these migrants inside Turkey, they did not give them the right to apply for international protection, as Turkey is bound to do by International Law. On the contrary, the Turkish gendarmerie brought them to the banks of the Evros and, with the threat of violence, forced them to come to Greece” said the minister who was at the outpost of the Evros and added: “The third thing I want to say is that it results from the statements, that a 5-year-old child lost his life on Turkish soil and this is really unpleasant. We will move through the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent so that the child’s body can be found on the Turkish island and buried with dignity by his family.”
