In detail, according to ELAS data, in the first 7 months of 2022, a total of 386 traffickers of illegal immigrants were arrested at the Greek-Turkish land and sea borders, of which 312 were in the Evros area.

An impressive increase in the illegal entry of immigrants, up to 113.1%, but also in the arrests of traffickers, in the first 7 months of 2022 and especially in the three months of May-July, compared to the corresponding period last year, according to the data of the Hellenic Police, which released the headquarters of the Corps.

According to these figures, the big problem is found in Evros, where the vast majority of traffickers have been arrested, which proves the trend that exists on the part of Turkey.

In detail, according to ELAS data, in the first 7 months of 2022, a total of 386 traffickers of illegal immigrants were arrested at the Greek-Turkish land and sea borders, of which 312 were in the Evros area.

In fact, from the total of these, 219 have been arrested in the last quarter (May-July 2022) alone, showing an increase of 58.7% compared to the corresponding period last year (May-July 2021), when 138 traffickers were arrested.

A similar picture is also observed in the cases of irregular entry of immigrants into the country, where an increase of 113.1% was recorded in the quarter of May-July 2022 compared to the corresponding period last year (4,126 against 1,936).

In total, in the first 7 months of 2022, 7,484 foreigners were arrested for illegal entry into the country, of which 3,554 were in the Evros region.

The headquarters of ELAS points out that the police services, based on the implementation of the existing operational planning but also in cooperation with co-competent bodies and participating in joint European actions, have achieved significant results in the field of illegal migrant trafficking.

It is also emphasized that “the operational actions of the Greek Police are daily for the protection of the Greek and by extension the European borders, with the aim of arresting smugglers of illegal immigrants, having in every case the protection of human life as a primary concern”.
