The reasons why it is considered difficult for the Centaur mutation to prevail in our country were explained by Pulmonology professor Theodoros Vasilakopoulos, speaking to SKAI and on the show “Morning briefing”.
“I am not at all sure that the “Centaur” will prevail”, said the professor.
As he clarified the Centaur variant has prevailed mainly in India, while in countries dominated by Omicron 4-5, although it appeared, it did not dominate:
“The Centaur variant is an evolution of Omicron 2. It has taken hold mainly in India. In the rest of the countries where it appeared, it does not seem to prevail, that is, where Omicron 4-5 dominates. On the contrary in India there was not much Omicron 4-5. There is no need to panic, we are watching her. It probably won’t prevail in any of the countries dominated by Omicron 4-5,” said the professor.
Regarding the picture presented by the pandemic, he emphasized that we are in third straight week of de-escalation.« Cases are decreasing as well as imports. three weeks ago we had about 400 hospital admissions and now we have 270. The transmission rate is at 0.91. We are entering the downward phase of this wave,” added Mr. Vasilakopoulos.
He noted that the main tool for protection against death is the 4th dose, especially for the elderly, and in this area, as he stated, “we have not done well and that is the reason for the high number of deaths”.
About opening of schools, underlined that the situation of the pandemic at that time should be taken into account. However, he does not consider, as he said, that it is necessary to have a universal use of the mask: “In the USA, the CDC opens schools without any measure, except in the areas where there is a high load. This could happen here too. If an area shows too many cases, it would be useful to return the mask. On the other hand, the universal use of a mask, if the epidemiological measures allow it, I do not consider it necessary”, explained the professor
