Former head of GES to SKAI on Evros: We are facing a hybrid threat – Turkey is behind the immigrants

“They tried to create a challenge in order to expose us” pointed out Georgios Kampas – The treatment he proposes for the Turkish provocations

Back from immigrants to Evros it was the Turkish army, the former GES chief, and former commander of the 4th Corps of the Evros Army, emphasized to SKAI. George Kambas, speaking of a “hybrid threat”.

“They tried to create a challenge in order to expose us that we are not correct in our behavior towards immigrants, something that is false,” pointed out Georgios Kampas.

The retired officer commented that immigration has been instrumentalized by Turkey, stating that there are many contested islets in Evros after the 1926 engraving which were created over time east or west of the middle river and did not exist then.

“There are many islets that come and go with the seasons and the time, so they boarded one of those unfortunate people to cross over… (The islets) might as well not belong to anyone,” he explained.

“Until 2016, there was a joint Greek-tourist committee that decided on these issues, this time unfortunately this has been discontinued,” he noted.

Mr. Kampas pointed out that “we could deal with the Turkish provocations with the EKAV, the police with the Red Cross, not with the army”. “Let’s go up (to the islet) and highlight the prevailing situation even more strongly, expose Turkey’s behavior in the fora”.

“Cooperation”

The Deputy Professor of International Politics, Democritus University of Thrace also spoke on our station about cooperation between slave trade networks and Turkish authorities Sotiris Serbos. Referring to Turkey, Mr. Serbos stated that “it is a country which operates transactionally expecting many sparrows with one shot.”

He also pointed out that migration flows compared to last year have more than doubled, with Ankara taking advantage of the fact that Europe is satisfied with the current migration situation, is content with giving funds to Turkey, and lacks a common agreement on migration and asylum in EU.
