The expansion and upgrading of the infrastructure (terminal, aircraft parking area) is a necessary condition, due to the rapid development of the airport in question.
The international tender for the concession of the right to administer, manage, operate, develop, expand, maintain and operate the Kalamata International Airport, for a concession period of around 40 years, announced the Superfund. In fact, according to estimates, through these investments, Kalamata airport will be able to welcome an ever-increasing number of passengers, estimated to approach 500,000, much earlier than the end of the current decade.
The main objective is to upgrade, modernize and expand the airport’s infrastructure, especially the passenger building (terminal). The expansion and upgrading of the infrastructure (terminal, aircraft parking area) is a necessary condition, due to the rapid development of the airport in question.
It is already estimated that in the current year (2022) the number of passengers will surpass the record number of 2019. This increased number of passengers, combined with the significant private investments in the tourism sector and the improvement of road infrastructure in the prefecture, is expected to have multiplying positive effects effects in Messinia, but also the wider zone of influence of the airport.
As underlined, this development is the result of the combined effort and close cooperation of the Superfund with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which multidimensionally supports this important development project.
In particular, according to a relevant announcement, the tender is fully integrated into the strategic planning of the Superfund for the utilization of regional airports, so that they can be a critical driver of the development of local societies. The start of the competition takes place after the drawing up of the text of the Invitation to Expression of Interest (Expression of Interest) and the publication of the relevant notice in the newspaper of the European Communities (7/09).
As it became known, the tender process is implemented in two phases:
* During the first phase of the competition, interested investors who meet specific technical-economic criteria are invited to submit the Expression of Interest Files by November 4, 2022. The Superfund will then evaluate the submitted files and select the candidates that meet the relevant criteria.
* The selected tenderers will be given the right to participate in the second (and final) phase of the tender, during which they will submit their final bids. In this phase, the exact duration of the concession and other critical contractual arrangements will be determined.
According to the relevant announcement, for the Superfund it is an important request to achieve and ensure a combination of high-quality operation and maintenance services for the airport, for the benefit of passengers, as the contractor that will be selected will also undertake the relevant investments, with a reasonable performance for the latter.
