The officers of the Port Authority of Rhodes, with the assistance of officers of the Directorate of Security and Protection of the Maritime Borders (DAPTHAS), proceeded to dismantle a criminal organization that was active in the illegal trafficking of migrants from Turkey to Greece – their residence in Rhodes and then facilitating their promotion inland. , of the Police Directorate of Dodecanese/TDM of Rhodes, of the mobile Office of Operations (Mobile Office) of EUROPOL.

After appropriate use of intelligence and the conduct of a coordinated wide-ranging police operation, were arrested in the port of Rhodes in total 15 foreigners who were trying to me fakes travel documents documentsin order to then be promoted inland to the rest of the European countries.

Specifically, 2 citizens aged 59 and 30, owners of a hotel unit, were arrested as members of the criminal organization, while arrest warrants are expected for 3 foreigners who are active in Rhodes in the illegal trafficking of immigrants, one of which is alleged to be leading member of the above criminal.

Lawful house searches were conducted in two hotel units, in one of which undocumented foreigners and a number of forged travel documents were found.

How the circuit worked

The organized circuit operated with distinct roles according to which the leader allegedly coordinated and communicated with the traffickers from Turkey on when and where in Rhodes a boat with illegal immigrants would arrive.

The second and third foreigners would pick them up from the respective beach of the island, then hide them from the Greek authorities by taking them to hotels on the island that functioned as safe houses and take care of supplying them with forged travel documents in order to be forwarded, via inland liners.

The profit of the criminal organization for the illegal transport of the migrants from Turkey to Rhodes ranges from 3,500 to 6,000 euros per head, depending on the choice of trafficker in Turkey and the type of vessel that would transport them, while for their transport by ship of the line from Rhodes to the hinterland received 500 euros per head for the forged travel document and ticket.

The Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate (DAPTHAS) analyzes and processes in depth the evidence that has emerged and investigates the possible extension of the activities of the members of the criminal organization in question to other islands of the Eastern Aegean, as well as their cooperation with other members organized circles, both in our country and abroad, with the same or similar criminal activities.
