La Repubblica: Irini Papa, the unforgettable Penelope in the 1968 Odyssey, has died

The iconic Greek actress Irini Pappa – among her dozens of unforgettable performances – played Penelope in the 1968 Odyssey TV series, co-produced by Rai, while her presence on the Italian artistic scene was strong.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica publishes the first news in its online edition about the death of Irini Papa. “Peace is dead Papa, the Italian TV audience will always remember her as Penelope in the 1968 Rai co-produced Odyssey TV series,” writes the Rome newspaper.

In one of her last interviews, when she was honored with the Venice Theater Biennale award, Irini Papa said “all awards are an honor and a glory, for this reason I thank the Italian public, who have honored me so much”.

Italy was, in effect, a second home for her, a country in which she had started her international career in the early fiftieswith collaborations with directors such as Francesco Rosi, Elio Petri, Mauro Bolognini, Maurizio Scaparro.

During the years of the dictatorship of the colonels, from Italy, the deceased actress had always helped the Resistance organizations, while even after the restoration of democracy in our country, when her professional obligations allowed, she continued to spend important periods in Eternal City, in the apartment next to Via Veneto, the street of the legendary “sweet life”.

Particularly important, at the beginning of the new millennium, was her professional collaboration with the University of Rome, Tor Vergata: in a theater designed by Santiago Calatrava, she had directed and starred in Euripides’ “Troades” and “Ekavi”. “I learn so much from young people, I try to tell them what I know. I prefer to ask them questions, not to give them answers”, the Greek actress who “adopted” the Italian theater and film scene had declared, shortly before the premiere.
