State-of-the-art Cardiology Clinic in “Sotiria”

Its inauguration took place today 3rd University Cardiology Clinic of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens at the Thoracic General Hospital “I SOTIRIA”, which was renovated with a donation from Anna Rigopoulos and Spilios Rigopoulos.

It is a state-of-the-art clinic that has 24 renovated beds and Heart Attack Unit with 8 fully equipped beds, while there is a cardiac and vascular ultrasound laboratory, where a number of tests are carried out.

The operation of the Hemodynamic Laboratory is noteworthy, where diagnostic coronary angiograms, angioplasty, including primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction, and operations for structural diseases of the heart, such as percutaneous replacement of the aortic valve, convergence of the interatrial communication, etc., are performed.

The construction of the Hemodynamic Laboratory was carried out with a donation from Athanasios and Marina Martinou (Aegea AMKE) and the angiographer/coronary surgeon was provided by the Region of Attica. At the same time, the second room of the hemodynamic laboratory was renovated, where electrophysiological studies and pacemaker-defibrillator placements are carried out.

The clinic is already in the general on-call program of the E.S.Y.fully participating in morning vigils and general vigils every four days.

In addition, there are morning outpatient clinics (Dyslipidemia, Heart-Diabetes-Obesity and Metabolic diseases, Cardio-oncology, Post-Covid cardiology follow-up, Heart failure and Myocardiopathies, Arrhythmology-pacing, Structural heart diseases, Interventional cardiology, etc.).

The human resources of the 1st Cardiology Clinic consist of 14 qualified cardiologists (Medical School Professors and E.S.Y. doctors), 13 specialist doctors, nursing staff, technologists and administrative staff.

Regarding the educational project, at the undergraduate level, the clinic systematically trains the fourth-year students of the Athens Medical School in the field of Cardiology and in the optional courses Interventional Cardiology and Molecular Cardiology. At the same time, at postgraduate level, PhD candidates and postgraduate students are trained at the clinic in two Postgraduate Programs (“Structural Heart Diseases” and “Cardiometabolic Medicine”). Particular emphasis is placed on the training of cardiologists through the implementation of a structured educational program of theoretical and practical training.

In the research field, the clinic conducts research clinical protocols and studies while participating in research projects, collaborating with other academic and research centers.

The goal of the 3rd University Cardiology Clinic of the Athens School of Medicine is to provide excellent and innovative health services with respect for patients, alongside the optimal training of students, interns and specialist cardiologists.
