Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil and Indonesia, three tropical forest countries, are working on a common position in the climate negotiations – the Congolese government announced this Tuesday (4) in Kinshasa, on the sidelines of a preparatory meeting for the COP27 conference.

“We believe that a concrete agreement will be concluded (…), it could happen before, or during, COP27”, in November in Egypt, said the Congolese Minister of the Environment, Eve Bazaiba, accompanied by representatives from Brazil and Indonesia. , at the “pre-COP27” in Kinshasa.

Aimed at preparing the ground for the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, this informal ministerial meeting ends on Tuesday, ahead of more regional discussions on Wednesday (5).

“Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia, three tropical forest basins that bring solutions to the climate challenge, could not pass up this opportunity prior to the COP” to continue the debates started last year at COP26 in Glasgow, continued the minister Congolese.

According to her, there are “very important” issues common to the Amazon, the Congo Basin and Indonesia, whose forests are major carbon sinks. Among these challenges are “the felling of trees, the exploitation of other natural resources and the market for carbon credits”.

On behalf of Brazil, the director of the Department of Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Leonardo Cleaver de Athayde, confirmed that he hopes to “be able to develop a joint work program” for COP27 and also for COP15 on biodiversity, which will be held in December in Montreal.
