The quadripartite aeronautical exercise “Eunomia 3 – 22”, held in the Eastern Mediterranean, within the framework of the coordinated quadripartite QUAD initiative of Greece, France, Italy and Cyprus, ended on Thursday, October 6. As announced, the exercise was conducted for the first time in 2020 and its coordination for 2022 had been taken over by Italy.
During the exercise, objects of search and rescue, protection of a hydrocarbon extraction platform, as well as objects of anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare and air threat response were performed.
The purpose of the exercise, the announcement added, was to strengthen cooperation in the field of aeronautical operations, to ensure freedom of navigation in the region, as well as to strengthen the interoperability and combat capability of the participating units.
The Greek Armed Forces participated with the frigate “Salamis”, the submarine “Katsonis”, six F-16 fighter jets, ASEPE EMB-145H aircraft and a team of the Underwater Disaster Management.
France participated with two Rafale fighter jets, Italy with the “ITS Libeccio” frigate and Cyprus with the “Ioannidis” Open Sea Patrol, an AW-139 helicopter, an Unmanned Aircraft System and a Special Operations team.
Yesterday, the Day of Distinguished Visitors was also held, the activities of which were attended by representatives of all four QUAD countries, including the Vice Commander of the Fleet Rear Admiral Polychronis Koulouris as a representative of the Chief of the Greek Armed Forces, the Chief of the General Staff of the National Guard Lieutenant General Dimokritos Zervakis, the commander of the Vice-Admiral Gilles Boidevezi of the French Mediterranean and Black Sea Naval Forces and the Commander of the 1st Naval Command of the Italian Navy Vice-Admiral Lorenzano Di Renzo.
The Day of Distinguished Visitors took place at sea under the coordination of Italy and Cyprus in the sea area East of Limassol, search and rescue objects, demolitions with the Fast Rope method and flights of Greek aircraft were carried out.
“Eunomia 3 – 22” demonstrates the collective intention and commitment of the Armed Forces of the four member countries of the European Union in terms of the implementation and respect of the International Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), with the aim of highlighting the role played by Greece, Cyprus, France and Italy as pillars for the promotion of security and stability in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, the announcement concludes.
