Its marine species protection service New Zealand announced today that the 240 black dolphinswho had stranded on remote Pitt Island, just three days after 250 whales died on a beach on neighboring Chatham Island.

THE Dave Ludquistmarine life technical advisor to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, said in an email yesterday that a team of experts assessed the situation yesterday and euthanized the surviving cetaceans.

“This decision is never taken lightly, but in such cases it is the best option,” Ludquist explained.

The Marine Corps does not attempt to return stranded cetaceans to the sea because of the danger to both humans and themselves, Landquist added.

THE Darren Groverthe managing director at the project Jonah, a cetacean rescue charity, notes that there were not enough people in the area to help get the black dolphins back to sea.

THE Pitt Island and Chatham Island they make up the Chatham Islands archipelago, which lies 840 kilometers off the east coast of the South Island of South Zealand.

Chatham has about 800 residents and only 20 on Pitt Island.

The reasons cetaceans excrete remain unknown.
