Mourning for PAOK and Greek football: “Gone” is Stavros Sarafis

After a long battle that he gave the last in the Intensive Care Unit of AHEPA, after a stroke he suffered, while remaining in the intensive care unit, the Stavros Sarafis“passed away”.

Stavros Sarafis (Epanomi, January 17, 1950) spent his entire professional career in the “double-headed of the North”. In fact, he is the top scorer in the team’s history with 136 goals and fourth in appearances with 358.

“Caesar” (as was his nickname) began his career in the Epanomi Renaissance, in his teens. On November 23, 1966, when he turned 16, he was called up for a match of the Greek National Youth Team. In the summer of 1967 at the age of 17 he was acquired by PAOK where he stayed until 1981 when he retired from active action, having won a championship in the 1975-76 season and 2 Greek cups (1971-72 and 1973-74).

As a footballer, together with his teammate Giorgos Koudas, he was a duo of high football quality as he was one of the key members of the great PAOK of the 1970s and distinguished himself for the goals he scored with headers.

After the end of his career as a football player, he assumed various positions in the Thessaloniki team. He has also been a service coach from time to time (1988-89, 1993-94, 1995-96 and 1999-2000).

In the national teams

With the jersey of the national team of Greece, he had from July 19, 1969 when he made his debut in the away friendly match against Australia, until his last match in 1977, a total of 32 appearances and 7 goals.

He won 3rd place in the Armed Forces World Cup 1972 with the armed forces national team. He also competed with the Youth national team in the European championship in 1968, as well as with the Hope national team, with which he won the Balkan Cup in 1969.
