According to his statement, the “Child’s smile” since Friday evening he has taken care of the six children of the family related to the case of abuse of the 12-year-old girl in Sepolia. In addition, the organization states that “sharing the anxiety and interest of the Athens Juvenile Prosecutor, Ms. Hassapi, the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office and the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office that the minor siblings of the family should not be separated”, the children have remained together and protected within the framework of the services offered by “Smile of the Child”.

“The Organization, consistent in its principles of not separating siblings, has many times in the past hosted 7, 5, 3 coc siblings, girls and boys, of different ages, even at the age of 16 and 17, like the siblings of this particular family” highlights in its announcement the “Smile of the Child” adding that “on the contrary, state institutions only accept boys or girls, and not older, culminating in the recent joint Ministerial Decision 40494/3.5.2022 of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, through which semi-independent living is promoted for children over 15 years of age, who have been deprived of a healthy family, have experienced situations of abandonment, neglect and abuse and cannot be rehabilitated through the institution of foster care or adoption”. As the organization underlines, “under the new legislation in force, the six siblings would inevitably be dispersed to state institutions in remote areas.”

Regarding the situation of the children, “Smile of the Child” states that “if necessary, they will also receive individualized therapeutic support at the “Children’s House”, the only Day Center in Greece for the provision of individualized Mental Health Services to Children and Adolescents, victims of any form of abuse” while the organization’s specialized people, such as pedagogues, social workers, psychologists and teachers, are already next to them “consciously and with dedication”, on a 24-hour basis.

Finally, “Smile of the Child” warmly thanks “the doctors, psychologists and social workers of the Social Service of the General Children’s Hospital of Athens Panagiotis and Aglaia Kyriakou”, who “will continue to offer their services to the children for the performance of child psychiatric assessment” and points out “the need to protect and respect children’s privacy, as it derives from the articles of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child”. For this reason, “Smile of the Child” henceforth “ceases any public reference to the background and the case that may revictimize them or hurt their soul”.
