ActionAid is organizing two days of events on October 24 and 25 at the Library of Parliament (formerly the Public Tobacco Factory), with talks, workshops and street art on the needs of women and girls in the city. The main speaker is the British author of the book “Invisible Women”, Caroline Criado Perez.

The two-day event starts on Monday, October 24 at 18:00 with a lecture by the British author and journalist Caroline Criado Perez, awarded for her work on issues of equality and multiculturalism. Her book Invisible Women was on the Sunday Times bestseller list for 16 weeks. The lecture will be followed by a short presentation of the program for the perspective of gender in public budgets (GREAT Budgeting), which aims to activate channels of communication between OTAs and citizens, advocacy at the local level to promote the ideas and proposals of citizens and also the cooperation of civil society bodies to promote participatory processes. The GREAT Budgeting program is implemented in collaboration with the Karditsa Women’s Center and the municipalities of Athens and Karditsa.

On Tuesday, October 25 at 17:00, a workshop will be held by the Urbana research group on “Public space from the perspective of gender”. It will analyze the factors shaping gendered experiences in public space, while discussing the results of the experiential mappings implemented with the participation of female beneficiaries of the ActionAid Community Center in Colonos in autumn 2021. The action will conclude with a walk ( walkthrough) in the neighborhood.

At the same time, on both days, there will be works on the streets of Colonos with depictions of 10+1 women who lived in Colonos, in an intervention on the fact that nine out of ten names of streets and monuments in Athens are male, while the female representations are almost non-existent.

The events will be hosted in the library of the Parliament (former Tobacco Factory, Lenorman 218) as part of the program GREAT Budgeting (Gender Responsive, Accountable and Transparent Budgeting), which is part of ActionAid’s action to empower women. Entry for both days is free and is open to citizens, representatives of civil society, as well as employees and local government officials. The Parliament library room has been given free of charge to ActionAid for the two days of events.

Entry with proof of police ID.

The “Gender Responsive, Accountable and Transparent (GREAT) Budgeting” project is implemented within the framework of the Active citizens fund program, with ActionAid as the implementing body and the Karditsa Women’s Center and the municipalities of Athens and Karditsa as partners.

The Active citizens fund program, amounting to €13.5 million, is financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway and is part of the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA) for the period 2014 – 2021, known as EEA Grants.
