School meals have started – They cover 85% of students across the country

According to the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, meals started earlier than ever with the inclusion of 268 additional schools

With the inclusion of 268 additional schools and with student participation exceeding 85%, based on the submission of this year’s parents’ statements, the “School Meals” program of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs for 2022-2023 began today, which implemented by the Welfare Benefits and Social Solidarity Organization (OPEKA).

In particular, as indicated in a relevant announcement, from today and for the entire school year, 1,629 schools benefit from the program. As the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, emphasized, “we have secured a budget of over 90.1 million euros and we are extending school meals to more schools than ever before. As of today, we distribute 217,300 meals daily to students from one end of our country to the other.”

According to the deputy minister, the School Meals program has been upgraded and improved, as the menu is now adapted to the children’s preferences, the meals are cooked according to the standards of the Mediterranean diet, while the raw materials are selected based on their nutritional value. In addition, the packaging is made from recyclable materials and has special markings for the date of preparation and packaging of the meal, as well as for the method of preservation.

Finally, the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Domna Michailidou, said: “We ensure the distribution of school meals, without any delay, for another year. We increase school lunches, upgrade the program and provide students with freshly cooked and healthy lunches according to the Mediterranean diet every day. With actions and not words, we continue to support even more families in need.”
