A total prison sentence of 26 years and a total fine of 13,000 euros was imposed yesterday by the Three-member Court of Appeal on Dodecanese Crimes to a 49-year-old Turk, who in October 2018, hid 12 foreigners in the hold of a sailing boat and after transporting them from the Turkish coast, landed half of them in Kalymnos and the rest in Kos!

The court recognized the foreigner tthe mitigating factor of subsequent good behavior and sentenced him to 6 years in prison and a fine of 2,000 euros for each transferred, that is, when merged, a total prison sentence of 26 years (he will serve under current law 20 years) and a total fine of 13,000 euros.

It is worth noting that the 49-year-old Turk was found guilty in the first instance for this case, on April 8, 2019, by the Single-Member Court of Appeal for Dodecanese Felonies, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros for each person transferred, as well as six months in prison and 1,500 euros for illegal entry into our country.

In other words, the 49-year-old was given a total prison sentence of 30 years and 2 months in prison (suspended for 25 years), as well as a total fine of 80,500 euros, with the appeal having no deterrent effect. The foreigner had, however, filed an appeal which was examined yesterday by the appellate court, succeeding in reducing his sentence.

It is noted that the 49-year-old Turk was accused of having carried out another transfer in September 2018, for which the court of first instance found him not guilty and was sentenced only for the 12 foreigners he transported on October 12 and 13 to Kalymnos and Kos respectively.

According to what had become known, everything started in the morning hours of Saturday, October 13, 2018, when six foreigners in Kalymnos were initially detected as having entered the country illegally, without legal travel documents. As it emerged from the preliminary investigation carried out by the Coast Guard of Kalymnos, the foreigners were hidden in a sailing vessel with the name “DEEP RISE” under the flag of Turkey.

The sailboat had sailed at noon on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the port of Kalymnos, following legal procedures for its entry there, according to the Schengen treaty.

Subsequently and after coordinated actions of the Port Authorities of Kalymnos and Kos, the “DEEP RISE” was spotted by a patrol boat of the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard, sailing in the direction of Kos with the same skipper, as well as six (06) additional people hidden inside the boat!

The sailing vessel was guided to the port of Kos with the assistance of two patrol vessels of the LS-EL.AKT. appropriate actions of patrol boat crews.
