“Kampanaki” Karamanlis: If the projects do not “run” in 2030, Athens will be an inaccessible city

“Major infrastructure projects are a very strong growth dividend”

The contribution of infrastructure projects to the development of the Greek economy was mentioned by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Kostas Ah. Karamanlis. The minister warned that if the projects do not “run” in 2030, Athens will be an inaccessible city, speaking today Thursday at the Olympia Forum III, organized by the Economic Forum of Delphi and the newspaper PATRIS.

Focusing on the ongoing projects in the capital, Mr. Karamanlis referred to three new metro stations in Piraeus, emphasizing “we connected land sea and air transport”. Mr. Karamanlis emphasized that: “The most important thing is that we have to run very fast because if we don’t run, we lose opportunities and if the projects are not done immediately, in 2030 Athens will be an inaccessible city. We must have a combination of road and rail projects. We have a network of specific movements that will in fact lead and give us solutions so that Athens does not become a very saturated city”.

According to what Mr. Karamanlis mentioned, very large infrastructure projects are a very strong dividend in development. They act and stimulate the domestic as well as the local economies. The construction sector is important for the economy and its development. “All over Greece we see very important projects being implemented such as Patras-Pyrgos and also the railway projects that have started. Infrastructure projects whether private or public means a lot of growth, it means jobs, and it has huge implications for a lot of professions. It is typical that Patras – Pyrgos has influenced a total of 600 different professions. We have brilliant minds who left during the crisis years who are now returning to their country and finding well-paid jobs”, noted Mr. Karamanlis.

For her work Patras – Pyrgos, the minister noted: “We are currently at almost 7% of completion. The project is running at a very fast pace since, like BOAK, apart from the development perspective, it is also a project. Road Safety”.

Regarding the interventions in the existing network, Mr. Karamanlis emphasized how the government did something that was done for the first time in Greece, finding funds of 30 million euros while he expressed his optimism that in 6 to 8 months from now when the first results, there will be a drastic reduction in accidents.

For the rest of the projects in the region of Western Greece, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport referred to the Kiato – Aegio railway network, which after many delays started, while the Rododafni – Rio was also unblocked. “Along with the Patra-Pyrgos road, we have also run the Patra-Pyrgos subscription line so that it can be put into operation as soon as possible and then we will upgrade it. In the Peloponnese we have set many priorities and they are being implemented. Projects that were forgotten are being done, projects that we all talked about for years, we see that they are being completed”, stressed Mr. Karamanlis.
