Thirty American universities come to cooperate with Greek HEIs – New technical schools for post-secondary education apply – 177,000 sets of robotics in schools – The special courses that are being considered nationwide in the public school program for the third year – What he said about the case of the 12-year-old in Column

Public schools are strengthened with specific measures and means, so that the children can get supplies and at the same time the Greek family is relieved of the cost, said the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos, speaking on Sky radio and Dimitris Oikonomou and Akis Pavlopoulos. Mrs. Kerameos referred in particular to the special subjects that are considered in the Panhellenic exams, but only for the third year this year they are taught in the public high school, the strengthening of all school departments in the country from the 5th grade and above with interactive boards, but also the receipt of 177,000 sets of robotics, but also the establishment of technical schools that will accept students after High School. At the same time, the Minister of Education announced that in the near future 30 large American universities will have their representatives in Greece in order to make agreements for joint programs with Greek universities.

Mrs. Kerameos said:

– The cuts may have children as victims – extracurricular activities, etc.

– Very difficult crisis, the government cannot completely solve the problem, it is doing everything it can. We announced that for the third year the special subjects will be taught in schools – they are now taught in the public school. Our goal is to make the public school better. We taught English from kindergarten, until now only the children who went to the private hospital did. All school departments will have interactive whiteboards, as will 177,000 robotics kits in the school curriculum. Public education aims to provide more supplies. As Ms. Kerameos said, the schools are “grouped” depending on the demand by region. These are subjects that were never taught in school.

For the resignation of the professor from EPAL: I read the letter, we investigated, there was no written communication, we ordered an investigation, it is under investigation. Great changes have been made, but it is an area where we must intensify our efforts. For the first time we have standard vocational high schools that you enter according to your grade – and in the high schools there is excellence. I go across the country, to public schools, that’s not the norm. There was the mentality that treated vocational education not as equal to general education. This is deeply wrong. We have announced schools for technical specialties, at the level after High School. The first two such schools are starting, they are for two years with theoretical teaching and paid practice.

-Are there still teacher shortages?

-At the beginning we made 25,000 teachers (after 12 years) we hired substitutes, but the school is a living organism, there are diseases, pregnancies, there are replacement needs.

On the case of the 12-year-old and the role that the school can play:

-Of course the school looked for the child when he went missing. The Justice and the Authorities are doing their job. The initiatives we undertake are in two directions. Immediately: We have over 3,000 school psychologists in the country’s schools. The other measure is the school life counselor, the teacher to whom the students open up, continuous training to manage such incidents. Modules such as sex education have been included in the compulsory program. Topics such as respect for diversity, for children to learn how to treat their friends with different choices or origins.

For universities

-The student allowance was increased, as announced by the prime minister from TIF, retroactively from last year which is being paid now.

In a few days, thirty leading American universities are coming to our country, with the aim of becoming a common curriculum with those. Now the agreement is being finalized with Yale and there will be a tuition waiver for the year at the American university. We will have English language programs with top professors. We have excellent universities and professors, but we have not had the place it deserves on the international academic map.

We had set as a priority the upgrading of the university environment. Remember the asylum that commerce brought inside the University of Economics. A few days ago, the operation took place in Zografou, in Biologico of Thessaloniki, an occupation of decades ended. When we talk about criminal acts, the police plan to put an end to them – in Zografou we were talking about criminal gangs. THEOPPI is one of the upgrade measures. Universities didn’t even have contingency plans – now most do. Controlled entry also started in Thessaloniki. Step by step, the academic environment is being restored. We have a long way to go. I will not say that we have solved all the problems. For ten years there was also a problem in higher education recruitment. We now hire one for each departure.
Teachers respond to training initiatives. It is one thing to have trade union leaders who resist initiatives – such as, for example, mentor. The union leaders appealed. It is a duty for the Ministry of Education to appeal, not everyone can claim the non-application of the law.

The education minister also referred to the increase in full-day school hours, noting that the extra time is spent in student groups and children get supplies through the public school, while strengthening the family and working parents.
